Euchre Scoring: How Many Points Each Hand Is Worth

Quick answer

Euchre scoring is simple: the team that called trump scores 1 point for winning 3 or 4 tricks and 2 for all 5 (a march). A player who goes alone and wins all 5 scores 4. If the callers win fewer than 3 tricks, they are euchred and the other team scores 2.

Only one team scores each hand. The first team to 10 points wins.

Every hand scores 1, 2 or 4 points

Count only the tricks won by the makers, the team that chose trump. That number decides the score. The other team, the defenders, scores only when the makers fall short.

Pick who called trump, whether they went alone, and how many tricks they won. The calculator tells you who scores and how much.

Euchre score calculator

1 point to the makers (Makers made their bid)

Your team called trump and took 4 tricks: your team scores 1 point.

The defenders took the other 1 trick.

Getting euchred costs 2 points

The makers need 3 of the 5 tricks. If they win 0, 1 or 2, they are euchred (say “YOO-kerd”). The makers score nothing, and the defenders score 2.

That is why you should not call trump on a hope. A made hand is usually worth only 1 point, but a euchre hands the other side 2. Call when you and your partner can likely win three tricks between you.

A lone hand scores 4 only if it takes all 5 tricks

The player who calls trump may say “alone.” Their partner lays down their cards and sits out. The lone player then plays both opponents.

  • All 5 tricks: 4 points.
  • 3 or 4 tricks: 1 point, the same as an ordinary hand.
  • 0, 1 or 2 tricks: euchred, and the defenders score 2.

So go alone only when you expect to win every trick. If you think you will lose one, play with your partner: the result is the same 1 point, with less risk of a euchre.

A sample game shows how the points add up to 10

Here is a short game between your team (We) and the other team (They). Each line shows who called trump and how many tricks the makers won.

We pass 10 after hand 6 and win the game, 11 to 1. Notice hand 2: They called trump but won only 2 tricks, so We scored for their euchre.

Some tables score a few hands differently

The table above is the standard North American game. You may meet these local rules. Agree on them before you start:

  • Super euchre: some North American players give the defenders 4 points, not 2, when the makers win no tricks at all.
  • Lone defender: under British rules, a defender may also play alone, and scores 4 for euchring the makers single-handed.
  • Game length: 5, 7 or 11 points instead of 10. British rules usually play to 11.

Our online game uses the standard scores above. See all the common house rules on the rules page.

Questions people ask

How many points do you get for a euchre?

Two. When the team that called trump wins fewer than 3 of the 5 tricks, they are euchred and the other team scores 2 points. Under standard rules it is still 2 even if the maker went alone.

How many points is a loner worth in euchre?

A lone hand that wins all 5 tricks scores 4 points. If the lone player wins only 3 or 4 tricks, it scores just 1, the same as a normal hand. If they win fewer than 3, the other team scores 2.

What is a march in euchre?

A march is when the team that called trump wins all 5 tricks. It scores 2 points, or 4 points if the maker went alone.

Do defenders score points for tricks in euchre?

Only if they euchre the makers by winning 3 or more tricks. Then they score 2. If the makers win 3 or more, the defenders score nothing that hand, however many tricks they took.

How many points do you play to in euchre?

Ten is the standard North American game. Some tables play to 5, 7 or 11. Agree before the first deal.

Can both teams score in the same euchre hand?

No. Only one team scores each hand: either the makers (1, 2 or 4 points) or the defenders (2 points for a euchre).
