2 Player Canasta Rules: Canasta for Two
Quick answer
2 player canasta rules are the four-player rules with three changes: deal 15 cards to each player, draw 2 cards from the stock but discard only one, and complete 2 canastas before you go out. Everything else stays the same, from the first-meld minimums to scoring and playing to 5,000.
Only three rules change when two people play
| Rule | 4 players | 2 players |
|---|---|---|
| Cards dealt to each player | 11 | 15 |
| Cards drawn from the stock each turn | 1 | 2 |
| Cards discarded each turn | 1 | 1 |
| Canastas needed to go out | 1 | 2 |
| Cards in the stock after the deal | 63 | 77 |
| Points to win | 5,000 | 5,000 |
Wild cards, red and black threes, the frozen pile, canasta values and the minimum first meld all work exactly as in our canasta rules. You simply play for yourself, with no partner to share melds.
Setting up: two decks, 15 cards each
- Shuffle two standard decks with four jokers: 108 cards.
- Deal 15 cards to each player, one at a time.
- Turn the next card face up to start the discard pile. If it is a joker, a two or a red three, turn another on top; the pile is now frozen.
- Red threes in your hand go face up in front of you at once, and you draw a card to replace each one.

1 × 100 points.
Your hand (15 cards)
Your hand: Four of hearts, Six of clubs, Seven of clubs, Eight of diamonds, Nine of diamonds, Nine of hearts, Ten of diamonds, Ten of hearts, Jack of spades, Queen of hearts, King of hearts, Ace of diamonds, Ace of spades, Two of hearts, Two of spades.
On your turn you draw two cards but discard only one
- Draw the top 2 cards of the stock, or take the whole discard pile if you can.
- Meld if you like: lay down new melds or add to your own.
- Discard one card.
So your hand grows by one card each turn you draw from the stock. That is why two-player canasta has bigger hands and longer melds than the four-player game, and why getting stuck with cards can be costly.
Taking the pile works the same: you take all of it
The two-card draw only applies to the stock. To take the discard pile you still need to meld its top card at once, with a natural pair when the pile is frozen, and then you take every card in it. Your side's pile is frozen for you until you make your first meld, just as in the four-player game.
You need two canastas to go out
With four players, one canasta for the partnership is enough. With two, you must complete 2 canastas yourself. Then you may go out by melding or discarding your last card. Going out is worth 100, or 200 concealed. There is no partner to ask, so you go out whenever you can.
When the stock runs low, the last draw is still a full turn
pagat's rule: if only one card is left in the stock, the player who draws it takes it as a full draw. A red three drawn alone as the last card ends the hand at once; that player can't meld or discard. After that, play goes on only while each player takes the discard to add to a meld.
Scoring is the same as in the four-player game
Natural canastas 500, mixed 300, red threes 100 each (800 for all four), plus your melded cards, minus the cards left in your hand. See canasta scoring rules for worked hands and a calculator. The first player to 5,000 wins.
Other ways to play canasta for two or three
- Three players: pagat deals 13 cards each, draws two and discards one. The first player to take the pile plays alone against the other two, and the game goes to 7,500.
- Manzana Canasta: a two-player game with a single 54-card deck.

How many canastas do you need to go out in 2 player canasta?
2. With four players one canasta is enough, but each player in the two-player game must complete 2 before going out.

Can you play canasta with one deck for two people?
There is a one-deck game for two called Manzana Canasta, using 54 cards. Regular canasta needs two decks and four jokers so that canastas of seven cards are possible.
